REPORT TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGARDING THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIM ASSISTANCE ACT 2022-23

Under the Domestic Violence Victim Assistance Act, victims of domestic violence receive access to the legal services they need to achieve safety and independence from abuse. Authorized by the General Assembly and administered by NC IOLTA on behalf of the North Carolina State Bar, funding provides resources to Legal Aid of NC and Pisgah Legal Services to combat domestic violence in North Carolina. As required by statute, IOLTA compiles a report to be sent to the General Assembly by January 15 of each year to document the funding administered and services provided.

Foundation Leadership Initiative

In 2017, NC IOLTA initiated an effort to connect with and educate foundations about the role of civil legal aid in North Carolina. This effort was part of the National Association of IOLTA Programs’ Foundation Leadership Alliance. Activities included research on current foundation giving to civil legal aid, a presentation at the NC Network of Grantmakers’ Annual Meeting, development of materials to better demonstrate the role of civil legal aid, and one-on-one conversations with foundation leaders in North Carolina.
